Tulsa Rowing Club Junior Eights Earn Gold Medal Finishes at the Head of the Oklahoma.

10/2/2006

This past weekend the Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors traveled to Oklahoma City to represent Tulsa in the Head of the Oklahoma. The team comprised of 37 athletes who originate from 15 different Tulsa and surrounding area high schools. During the two day event many different boat types were entered and the team placed in the following events. Probably the most encouraging result was the team’s results in the Junior Eight event. Both crews managed 1st place finishes against the competition.

1st Place

Girls Junior Eight

Boys Junior Eight

2nd Place

Girls Junior Four

3rd Place

Boys Junior Four

Mixed Open Eight

In addition to the above results the girl’s junior quads placed 7th, 9th, 17th and 22nd in a field of 23 boats. Head Coach, Neil Bergenroth, was pleased with his team’s first racing event.

“We are developing a very strong team, who work together well and support each other both on and off the water” said Coach Bergenroth. Speaking of his 32nd Birthday which was Sunday he then said, “It was a great birthday present that the kids gave me.”

By the end of the weekend, many of the athletes were exhausted but happy with their results. Some of the athletes had rowed as much as 32km over the course of the two day event.

Another great result for the junior’s team was the mixed open eight. The team place 3rd in a field composed of masters and collegiate crews. The crew qualified for the 500m super sprint at the end of the day. This proved a very exciting endeavor as the juniors went stroke for stroke with the University of Texas crew over the distance.

The team is now currently preparing to race in America’s premier rowing event – The Head of the Charles in Boston which takes place on October 21st and 22nd. This event attracts over 1000 different crews with over 300,000 spectators in attendance. It is the single largest US rowing event in the rowing calendar. The club has entries in the Youth Double and the Youth Four.

“I’m hopeful of a good result for our program at this special event. Our preparation has been very focused over the past four weeks and the athletes are laying the groundwork for a great season”, said Coach Bergenroth.
